Description
Just arrived with us at RFH Classics we have this rather special and particularly early 1959 Rover P5 3-Litre Mk I Saloon, beautifully finished in the original factory colour combination of Shadow Green over Rush Green with a contrasting Beige interior. Built on 22nd June 1959 and supplied new by Henlys Motors of Piccadilly, London, this is a wonderfully characterful example of Rover's imposing P5 and comes with a particularly interesting history. The car was subsequently exported to Cagliari, Italy, before returning to the UK in 2008.
Remarkably, it then remained with the same UK owner for the following 19 years, during which time it became a well-known and much-loved example, attending numerous club events, shows and even being used for weddings. Its history file is especially impressive and contains earlier MOT certificates, period Rover literature, workshop manuals, photographs, magazine and newspaper cuttings and documentation covering its life and maintenance. The car itself has also enjoyed considerable media exposure, including features in Classic Car Weekly, Classic & Sports Car and Rover P5 magazine Take Five.
Perhaps most unusually, it has even enjoyed a little television fame, having appeared in the BBC drama Call the Midwife, Series 6 Episode 1. Showing a recorded 78,258 miles, this P5 has clearly been cherished and professionally maintained, with extensive recommissioning carried out whilst retaining as much originality as possible. It remains MOT tested until May 2027, despite being MOT exempt.
Powered by Rover's wonderfully smooth 3.0-litre straight-six engine, this imposing early P5 represents everything that made Rover synonymous with traditional British luxury during the period. Currently undergoing our usual preparation, further details and a full set of photographs will follow shortly. About the Rover P5
The Rover P5, affectionately known as the 'Auntie' Rover, is a quintessential British luxury saloon and coupé produced from 1958 to 1973. Renowned for its stately presence, opulent interior, and robust construction, it was a favourite of prime ministers, royalty, and discerning individuals seeking a refined and comfortable driving experience. In the UK market, the P5 holds a revered classic status, admired for its engineering integrity and timeless design, often seen as a more accessible alternative to a Rolls-Royce.
Why Buy a Used Rover P5?
- Timeless British Luxury: The P5 offers a unique blend of wood, leather, and chrome, exuding an old-world charm and craftsmanship rarely found in modern vehicles.
- Classic Car Status: As a genuine classic, the P5 benefits from cheaper classic car insurance and can be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) and ULEZ charges, making it an affordable classic to own.
- Smooth and Comfortable Ride: Designed for long-distance touring, the P5 provides an incredibly smooth and composed ride, soaking up road imperfections with ease.
- Strong Investment Potential: Well-maintained examples, particularly the V8-engined P5B Coupé, have seen consistent appreciation in value, making them a wise classic car investment.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1958–1967 (3-Litre Saloon/Coupé): £10,000 – £25,000 — At this price, you can find a solid, usable example of the earlier six-cylinder models, possibly needing some cosmetic attention.
- 1967–1973 (P5B 3.5-Litre Saloon): £15,000 – £30,000 — These V8-powered saloons offer more performance and are increasingly sought after, with prices reflecting good to excellent condition.
- 1967–1973 (P5B 3.5-Litre Coupé): £20,000 – £45,000+ — The coupé commands a premium, especially the desirable V8 variant, with top-end prices for concourse-level cars.
Common Issues to Check
- Rust: Thoroughly inspect sills, wheel arches, boot floor, inner wings, and chassis rails for corrosion, which can be extensive if not addressed.
- Automatic Gearbox: The Borg-Warner 35 automatic transmission can develop leaks or suffer from rough shifts if not properly serviced; check for smooth operation.
- Electrical System: As with many cars of this era, age-related electrical gremlins are common; check all lights, wipers, instruments, and heater controls.
- Brake System: Ensure the brakes are effective and not seizing, particularly the calipers and rear wheel cylinders, and check for signs of old or contaminated fluid.
- Steering Play: Check for excessive play in the steering box, which can be a common wear item on older vehicles and may require specialist attention.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 12–22 mpg (depending on engine and driving style, the 3.0L straight-six is generally more economical than the 3.5L V8).
- Insurance Group: Typically low for classic car policies, often significantly cheaper than modern equivalents, but requires specialist insurance.
- Servicing: While mechanically robust, the P5 requires regular maintenance by a classic car specialist. Parts availability is generally good, but some specific components can be harder to source.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Rover P5 3-Litre Saloon (Mark I, II, III): Ideal for the purist seeking the original stately luxury experience, with the characteristic straight-six engine delivering smooth, if unhurried, progress.
- Rover P5 3-Litre Coupé (Mark I, II, III): Offers a sportier profile with a lower roofline and thinner pillars, appealing to those who desire the P5's refinement but with a more distinctive, less formal look.
- Rover P5B 3.5-Litre Saloon: A fantastic blend of classic luxury and effortless performance, thanks to the Buick-derived V8 engine, making it a great touring car for enthusiasts who appreciate power.
- Rover P5B 3.5-Litre Coupé: Widely considered the most desirable variant, combining the V8's power and sound with the sleek coupé body, it's perfect for collectors and drivers seeking the ultimate P5 experience.
