Description

With us at RFH Classics, we are delighted to once again offer this beautifully presented 1973 (L) MGB Roadster 1.8, finished in striking Gloss Black and complemented by contrasting Tan Weave interior trim. This is a car we know particularly well, having first supplied it nearly five years ago before later welcoming it back and selling it again a couple of years ago. Now returning to us, it is particularly pleasing to see that the car continues to present so well.

Gloss Black is a relatively unusual colour to find on an MGB Roadster and works exceptionally well with the clean lines of the early chrome bumper body. Combined with the Tan interior, Chrome Wire Wheels and excellent brightwork, it gives the car a particularly elegant appearance with considerably more individuality than many of the more familiar colour combinations. The coachwork retains a deep, impressive shine and reflects the care the car has continued to receive.

Accompanying the car we have now created the substantial history which accompanies the car into one of our RFH Classics history folders presenting the history in chronological order. The folder includes early MOT certificates together with a large number of invoices and receipts documenting maintenance, repairs and improvement work carried out throughout the car's life. Of particular note is a significant programme of refurbishment undertaken during 2017, with paperwork recording replacement Tan interior trim, a new hood, replacement dashboard and repainting of the car.

More recently it has benefited from an upgraded steering wheel, new steering rack, new water pump and Overdrive service. This documentary record provides useful evidence of the investment made over the years and helps explain its impressive condition today. Inside, the Tan Weave trim is perfectly complemented by contrasting Black carpets and the traditional MGB dashboard layout featuring the wood trim, helps create a smart and period-appropriate cabin.

Importantly, the interior has matured well since the documented refurbishment and remains a particularly attractive place to sit. Under the bonnet sits the proven 1798cc four-cylinder petrol engine running lead free fuel. From cold it starts readily with a little choke and, once warm, displays excellent oil pressure.

The engine is paired with the four-speed manual gearbox and desirable Overdrive, giving the car the more relaxed higher-speed cruising ability that makes such a difference to an MGB Roadster in modern traffic. Since arriving back with us we have given the car a good run to confirm everything is working properly. Anyone looking for a chrome bumper MGB Roadster that offers something a little different, this is a particularly compelling example.

The unusual Gloss Black and Tan colour combination, desirable Overdrive, Chrome Wire Wheels and substantial history folder combine to create a car with both strong visual appeal and excellent supporting provenance. Viewing is available by appointment at our Bedfordshire showroom, with nationwide delivery available by arrangement. RFH Classics are proud to be Bedfordshire's largest independent classic car dealer, with over 35 years of experience supplying quality vehicles you can buy with confidence.

Our reputation has been built on trust, excellent customer service and the many positive reviews we receive from customers both locally and across the UK. This car qualifies for historic road tax and benefits from being ULEZ exempt. Although vehicles of this age are MOT exempt this car has been regularly tested by both us and former owners with a fresh MOT being provided upon sale helping provide additional peace of mind for the next owner.

As a classic it is eligible for low-cost classic car insurance and is supplied with 3 months major mechanical warranty. All of our vehicles are sold clear of finance or insurance damage with a certificate provided at handover. We only recommend using premium unleaded fuel (E5) in all of our classic vehicles.

Unable to visit our showroom, UK delivery is available and we can also offer export services if required. Our website also features a walk-around video of every vehicle in stock. To find out more or arrange a viewing contact RFH Classics today, we look forward to hearing from you.

About the MG Mgb

The MG MGB is a quintessential British classic, embodying the spirit of affordable open-top motoring from the 1960s and 70s. Available as a charming two-seater Roadster or a practical 2+2 GT coupé, it’s renowned for its timeless styling, simple mechanics, and engaging driving experience. Highly appealing to enthusiasts, classic car newcomers, and those seeking a fun weekend car, the MGB holds a strong reputation in the UK for its robust nature, vast club support, and ease of maintenance, making it an accessible entry point into classic car ownership.

Why Buy a Used MG MGB?

  • An accessible entry point into classic car ownership, offering a rewarding and engaging driving experience.
  • Strong investment potential; well-maintained examples often appreciate in value over time.
  • Benefit from a vibrant owners' club scene and excellent parts availability, making maintenance straightforward.
  • Timeless British styling ensures the MGB remains a head-turner, offering pure, analogue motoring enjoyment.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Pre-1974 Chrome Bumper (project condition): £5,000 – £12,000 — These are often runners but require significant restoration work to address rust and mechanical wear.
  • 1974–1980 Rubber Bumper (good condition): £12,000 – £22,000 — These models represent good value, offering a solid, usable classic that may have had some previous restoration.
  • Pre-1974 Chrome Bumper (excellent/restored): £22,000 – £40,000+ — Represents top-tier examples, often fully restored to a high standard, or rare variants like the MGB V8.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust: Thoroughly inspect sills, wheel arches, floor pans, boot floor, and around headlights – it's the MGB's Achilles' heel.
  • Overheating: Check for signs of overheating, especially in traffic, which can indicate a tired cooling system or head gasket issues.
  • Electrical Gremlins: The Lucas electrics can be temperamental; test all lights, gauges, and switches for intermittent faults.
  • Oil Leaks: Minor oil leaks are common with classic cars, but significant leaks from the engine or gearbox should be investigated.
  • Gearbox and Overdrive: Listen for crunching synchromesh, especially on third gear, and ensure the optional overdrive engages smoothly and quietly.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Expect around 25–35 mpg, depending on engine tune and driving style.
  • Insurance Group: Typically low for classic car insurance policies, often with agreed value and limited mileage terms.
  • Servicing: Straightforward mechanics make servicing relatively inexpensive, with many parts readily available and a strong network of specialists.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • MGB Roadster (Chrome Bumper): The most iconic and sought-after, offering the purest classic sports car experience and often commanding higher prices.
  • MGB GT (Chrome Bumper): A sleek and practical 2+2 coupé with a hatchback, providing greater security and weather protection while maintaining classic charm.
  • MGB Roadster (Rubber Bumper): Produced from 1974 onwards, these offer a more affordable entry into MGB ownership, benefiting from improved crash protection and often a smoother ride.
  • MGB GT (Rubber Bumper): The most affordable way into MGB GT ownership, offering the same practicality and charm as its chrome-bumper sibling but with a slightly higher ride height.
  • MGB V8: A rare factory model or common conversion, offering significantly enhanced performance for those seeking a more potent classic grand tourer.
