Description
The bike specialists, trading standard award winners for the past 12 years. Bike ID: #9933 We are delighted to announce the arrival of another XT500 into our collection, as with our other XT stock this bike was painstakingly restored by XT500 Guru's A2 Restorations for a local collector who handed his collection to us recently. This 1977 example differs due to the fact that it has been modified into the custom creation you see advertised today.
With unique paint, chrome tank and custom exhaust this bike certainly stands out in a crowd. The bike will be recommissioned by Andy at "A2" prior to its new owner taking collection of the bike. The 1980 Yamaha XT500 is a classic dual-sport motorcycle that's become iconic among vintage motorcycle enthusiasts for its rugged simplicity, torque-heavy engine, and off-road capability.
It was affectionally nicknamed the "Thumper" We are a family-owned company who pride ourselves on the quality of our Motorcycles and all of them are carefully chosen, handpicked enthusiast pre-owned examples that are always HPI Clear for your peace of mind. About the Yamaha Xt
The Yamaha XT series represents a lineage of highly capable and versatile motorcycles, renowned in the UK for their 'go-anywhere' spirit and legendary reliability. Common Issues to Check
- Corrosion: Pay close attention to the exhaust system, fasteners, and frame for signs of rust, especially on bikes used year-round in the UK or off-road.
- Fuel Pump Issues (XT660 models): Some XT660s can suffer from fuel pump reliability issues; check for hesitation or stalling.
- Regulator/Rectifier Failure (XT1200Z): The larger Super Ténéré can be prone to regulator/rectifier failure, which impacts the charging system; check battery health and warning lights.
- Suspension Wear: Inspect fork seals for leaks and check the rear shock for play or signs of degradation, particularly important on bikes ridden off-road.
- Headstock and Wheel Bearings: Check for any play or notchiness in the steering head bearings and ensure wheel bearings are smooth and free from excessive movement.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: XT660 models typically achieve 50–60 mpg, while the XT1200Z Super Ténéré often sees 40–50 mpg, depending on riding style.
- Insurance Group: Ranging from Group 9 for the XT660R to Group 13 for the XT1200Z Super Ténéré, making them moderately insurable.
- Servicing: The single-cylinder XT660 models are known for straightforward and relatively inexpensive servicing, while the XT1200Z Super Ténéré, with its twin-cylinder engine and advanced electronics, may incur slightly higher costs.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Yamaha XT660R: This dual-purpose model is ideal for riders seeking a balance of on-road comfort and off-road capability, perfect for exploring forgotten trails and daily commuting.
- Yamaha XT660X: With its supermoto setup, including smaller wheels and road-biased tyres, the XT660X is perfect for urban carving and spirited road riding, offering agile handling.
- Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré: Designed for long-distance touring and serious adventure, this larger XT offers excellent comfort, a powerful twin-cylinder engine, and advanced rider aids for extended journeys across varied terrain.
