What to Look For When Buying Used
The Panigale V4 is a high-performance machine; thorough checks are essential.
- Service History: Crucial. Ducati's Desmo service intervals are demanding. Minor services are typically every 7,500 miles (or 12 months), while the significant 'Desmo Service' for valve clearance checks is every 15,000 miles (or 24 months for older models, 18,000 miles for 2022+). Ensure these have been completed by a Ducati specialist, with stamps and receipts. Missing Desmo services can be very costly.
- Fairing Condition: Check for crash damage, even minor scrapes. Replacements are expensive. Look for mismatched paint or panel gaps.
- Electronics: Test all rider modes (Race, Sport, Street), ABS, Traction Control (DTC), Wheelie Control (DWC), Slide Control (DSC), and Quick Shifter (DQS). Error messages on the TFT dash are a red flag.
- Suspension: On 'S' models with Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 electronic suspension, check for leaks and ensure modes change correctly. For standard models, inspect forks for leaks.
- Tyres & Brakes: Expect premium tyres (e.g., Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa II / Supercorsa SP). Check for even wear and correct pressure. Brake pads and discs should have plenty of life left.
- Chain & Sprockets: Look for kinks, excessive slack, or worn teeth.
- Engine Noise: Listen for any unusual noises – the V4 has a distinct sound, but irregular knocking or rattling could indicate serious issues.
- Aftermarket Parts: Many V4s have aftermarket exhausts (e.g., Akrapovič), tail tidies, or levers. Ensure they are quality items and fitted professionally. Be aware of potential warranty issues for non-approved parts.
Running Costs & Insurance
- Insurance Group: Typically Group 17 (out of 17). Expect high premiums, especially for younger riders or those without extensive no-claims bonuses. Get quotes before committing.
- Fuel Economy: Expect around 30-35 mpg (imperial gallons) with conservative riding, dropping significantly under hard acceleration. The 16-litre tank will offer a theoretical range of around 100-120 miles.
- Servicing Costs: Minor service (oil, filter) can be £250-£400. A major Desmo service can easily range from £800 to over £1,500, depending on what's required and the dealer's labour rates.
- Tyre Replacement: Expect to spend £300-£450 for a pair of suitable performance tyres, and they'll likely need replacing every 2,000-4,000 miles depending on riding style.
- ULEZ: All Ducati Panigale V4 models (2018 onwards) are Euro 4 or Euro 5 compliant and therefore ULEZ compliant for London and other UK clean air zones.
Is the Ducati Panigale V4 Right For You?
The Panigale V4 is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced riders. It's a focused, high-performance superbike designed for the track or exhilarating rides on suitable roads.
- It's for you if:
- You seek an unparalleled, visceral V4 superbike experience.
- You prioritise cutting-edge technology and performance.
- You have significant riding experience on powerful motorcycles.
- You understand and can afford the high running and maintenance costs.
- You plan to use it for track days or spirited B-road blasts, not necessarily commuting.
- Consider alternatives if:
- You're new to high-performance bikes (consider a Panigale V2, Ducati Streetfighter, or Kawasaki ZX-6R).
- You need a more comfortable road tourer (e.g., Ducati Multistrada, BMW S 1000 XR).
- Running costs are a major concern (Japanese superbikes like the Honda CBR1000RR-R or Yamaha YZF-R1 often have lower servicing costs).
- You primarily do urban commuting (a smaller, more nimble bike would be better).
