Description

The bike specialists, trading standards award winners. Bike ID:#10680 Here we are delighted to offer the rare opportunity to acquire this stunning Triumph Rickman Metisse, a motorcycle forever associated with the legendary Steve McQueen and the golden era of off-road racing. Our example is accompanied by excellent provenance, including a letter from the Triumph Owners' Club confirming that the bike was built using a Triumph Tiger 650 and recording its date of manufacture as 7th July 1966.

We also have documentation from Mr Gerry Lisi confirming the motorcycle as a genuine Metisse Steve McQueen Desert Racer. The bike is showing just one former keeper on the V5C and was officially road registered in September 2014. With its genuine Metisse provenance, fascinating history and unmistakable Steve McQueen association, this is a rare opportunity to own a truly iconic piece of British motorcycle history. "Metisse started in 1959, and still build off-road machines today.

It was half a century ago that Don & Derek Rickman developed a strong, light, elegant chassis for 500cc scrambling which, when fitted with either a Triumph twin or AMC single, out-handled all their contemporary rivals. Metisse manufactured thousands of frame kits; the same product upon which the brothers were winning at international level. It is perhaps no surprise that they attracted dozens of well-known customers, amongst them Steve McQueen, who purchased several examples into which were slotted 650cc Triumph engines that - to his personal requirement - he and Bud Ekins then modified slightly for Desert Racing." We are a family-owned company who pride ourselves on the quality of our Motorcycles and all of them are carefully chosen, handpicked enthusiast pre-owned examples that are always HPI Clear for your peace of mind.

We offer all the usual used Motorcycle Dealer facilities such as Low-rate finance and extended warranties and operate a no pressure environment where you can relax and enjoy good old-fashioned service with a smile. We have just upgraded our Indoor Showroom where you can see Motorcycles you sometimes can only dream of seeing and sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves when we get certain bikes in as we would like to keep them all! We cater for very specialist tastes and can usually source rare and coveted bikes that we do not have in stock and have lots of contacts throughout the world.

About the RICKMAN METISSE

The Rickman Metisse is not just a motorcycle; it's a legendary British frame kit that transformed the custom motorcycle world, particularly in off-road racing. Renowned for its superior handling and lightweight chrome-molybdenum chassis, the Metisse (French for 'mongrel' or 'mix') was typically built around powerful British engines from Triumph, BSA, or Matchless, though Japanese engines also found their way in. It appeals to discerning classic motorcycle enthusiasts, custom builders, and riders who prioritise exceptional chassis dynamics and iconic styling over modern conveniences, holding a revered reputation in the UK classic bike scene for its engineering excellence.

Why Buy a Used Rickman Metisse?

  • Exceptional Handling: The Metisse chassis is legendary for its superb balance, precise steering, and lightweight design, offering a truly engaging riding experience.
  • Classic British Engineering: A testament to British ingenuity, owning a Metisse means owning a piece of motorcycle history, celebrated for its innovative frame design and quality.
  • Unique & Customisable: Often built to individual specifications, each Metisse has a unique story and character, allowing for a personal connection and potential for further customisation.
  • Collector's Item: Due to their limited production and iconic status, well-preserved or expertly built Rickman Metisse motorcycles are highly sought after by collectors and can be a sound investment.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Pre-1980 Builds (Classic British Engine): £8,000 – £15,000 — These often represent earlier, purer builds, with prices varying significantly based on originality and condition.
  • Post-1980 Builds (Varied Engines): £12,000 – £20,000 — May feature later chassis updates or Japanese engine swaps, offering a blend of classic aesthetics and enhanced reliability.
  • Professionally Restored/High-Spec: £18,000 – £30,000+ — Commands premium prices for concours-level restorations, rare engine configurations, or competition-prepared machines.

Common Issues to Check

  • Engine Integrity: As engines were fitted by builders, inspect the specific unit (e.g., Triumph twin, BSA single) for oil leaks, unusual noises, and signs of proper maintenance.
  • Frame Condition: Carefully check the distinctive chrome-molybdenum frame for any cracks, previous repairs, or accident damage, especially around welds and stress points.
  • Rickman Originality: Verify the presence and condition of genuine Rickman components such as the fibreglass tank, seat unit, Ceriani forks, and hubs, as these add to value.
  • Electrical System: Older wiring on these machines can be prone to issues; check for brittle insulation, poor connections, and the functionality of all lights and ignition.
  • Build Quality: Since many Metisses were home-built kits, assess the overall standard of assembly, component choices, and attention to detail, as quality can vary widely.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Highly variable, depending on the engine fitted, but expect around 30-50 mpg for most common configurations (e.g., 650cc Triumph twin).
  • Insurance Group: Not applicable in the same numerical grouping as cars. Specialist classic motorcycle insurance is required, with premiums based on agreed value and rider history.
  • Servicing: Generally requires a skilled classic motorcycle mechanic or experienced DIY enthusiast. Parts availability depends on the specific engine and components used.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Street Scrambler: For those who want the classic Metisse look and handling for road use, often with a reliable British twin or single engine, fitted with road-legal lights and equipment.
  • MX/Competition Replica: If you're a vintage motocross or trials enthusiast, choose a model built purely for off-road performance, often with period-correct competition engines and stripped-back design.
  • Triumph 650cc Twin Powered: A popular and potent choice, offering a great balance of power, sound, and classic British motorcycle character, suitable for both road and light off-road.
  • BSA Gold Star Single Powered: A rarer and highly sought-after variant, providing superb torque and a distinctive thumping soundtrack, often found in competition builds.
  • Honda XL/XR Conversion: For a slightly more reliable and easier-to-maintain option, some Metisses feature period-correct Japanese single-cylinder engines, blending classic chassis with modern practicality.
