It had a claimed top speed nearing 100 mph and roughly 5,721 Venoms were built from 1955 to 1970 with the Clubman version from 1959 to 1960) From 1960 Velocette offered a dedicated Clubman racing-oriented variant of the Venom.

Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- Project Bikes (Unrestored, Running or Non-Running): £8,000 – £15,000 — These bikes require significant mechanical and cosmetic work, ideal for a dedicated restoration project.
- Good Runners (Usable, Older Restoration): £16,000 – £28,000 — These are roadworthy examples, often with some patina or an older restoration, perfect for regular riding and light improvements.
- Concours/Pristine Examples (Fully Restored or Original): £29,000 – £40,000+ — Represents top-tier condition, often having undergone professional restoration to a very high standard or being highly original, suitable for showing.
Common Issues to Check
- Engine Integrity: Pay close attention to any knocks or excessive smoke, indicating potential wear in the big end, main bearings, or cylinder barrel/piston.
- Oil Leaks: While some weeping is characteristic of vintage British motorcycles, excessive leaks from the crankcase, primary chaincase, or gearbox warrant investigation.
- Electrical System: The original 6-volt system can be temperamental; check for charging issues, flickering lights, and consider if it's been converted to 12-volt for improved reliability.
- Frame and Cycle Parts: Inspect the frame for cracks, previous repairs, or signs of accident damage, and check wheel rims, spokes, and suspension for wear.
- Originality of Components: For collectors, matching engine and frame numbers and the presence of original components (e.g., carburettor, exhaust, instruments) are crucial for value.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: Generally around 50-65 mpg, offering reasonable economy for a 500cc classic, though often less of a primary concern for owners.
- Insurance Group: Typically falls into specialist classic motorcycle insurance groups, offering agreed-value policies and often very low premiums for limited mileage.
- Servicing: Requires a skilled classic motorcycle mechanic or an experienced owner. Parts availability is generally good through specialists, but specific components can be expensive.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Standard Velocette Venom (MSS Frame): This is the quintessential Venom, offering a fantastic blend of sporting performance and practicality for touring. It's a superb all-rounder for classic riding enthusiasts.
- Velocette Venom Thruxton: The ultimate factory-tuned variant, built for racing and high performance, featuring a revised cylinder head, larger carburettor, and close-ratio gearbox. Highly desirable and commands significantly higher prices due to its rarity and legendary status.
- Venom Clubman: Often a standard Venom that has been upgraded with period-correct performance modifications like clip-on handlebars, rear-sets, and improved carburetion to enhance its sporting credentials for a more aggressive riding position.
