Description
The bike specialists, trading standard award winners for the last 12 years. Bike ID: #9824 Here we have for sale a Ducati 999R MK1. This gorgeous example is a 2003 Mk1 example with 3,717 miles on the clock.
The bike is #121 on the headstock and is in pristine, completely original condition. The bike has a good service history with the last service being carried out by Cornerspeed Ducati which did include the belts, brake fluid & coolant changed. When the bike leaves us for a new home it will benefit from another fresh service by us including belts, Brake fluid & MOT.
Our bike does also have the Ducati leather wallet which includes both keys, Plaque, tool kit, ECU & bike cover. The 999R superseded the Massimo Tamburini designed Ducati 916, 996 & 998 range of superbikes in 2003 and was produced through to 2006. This bike enjoyed great success in World Superbike and was raced in the series through the 2007 season.
The 999R was designed by Pierre Terblanche amid much controversy over its styling, despite this it is still known as an extremely high performance race orientated motorcycle. We are a family-owned company who pride ourselves on the quality of our Motorcycles and all of them are carefully chosen, handpicked enthusiast pre-owned examples that are always HPI Clear for your peace of mind. We offer all the usual Motorcycle Dealer facilities such as Low-rate finance and extended warranties and operate a no pressure environment where you can relax and enjoy good old-fashioned service with a smile.
We have just upgraded our Indoor Showroom where you can see Motorcycles you sometimes can only dream of seeing and sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves when we get certain bikes in as we would like to keep them all! We cater for very specialist tastes and can source rare and coveted bikes that we do not have in stock and have lots of contacts throughout the world.
About the Ducati 999
The Ducati 999 is an iconic, if initially controversial, Italian superbike that succeeded the beloved 916/996/998 series. Launched in 2003, its distinctive Pierre Terblanche design, featuring stacked headlights and integrated exhaust, set it apart. Powered by the potent Testastretta V-twin engine, the 999 is a focused, high-performance machine renowned for its track prowess and thrilling ride. It appeals to true motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors seeking an uncompromising, exclusive superbike experience, and its status in the UK market is growing as a modern classic.
Why Buy a Used Ducati 999?
- Exhilarating Performance: The Testastretta engine delivers raw power and a distinctive V-twin soundtrack, offering an unadulterated superbike riding experience.
- Distinctive Design: Its unique, often polarising aesthetics ensure it stands out from the crowd, making it a true head-turner and a conversation starter.
- Increasing Collectibility: As a significant model in Ducati's history, the 999 is steadily gaining classic status, with well-maintained examples appreciating in value.
- Track-Ready Chassis: With its stiff trellis frame, quality suspension, and sharp handling, the 999 is an exceptional machine for spirited road riding and track days alike.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 2003–2004 (Standard Biposto/Monoposto): £6,500 – £9,500 — At this price, you'll find early models, likely with higher mileage but offering an accessible entry into 999 ownership.
- 2005–2006 (Facelift Standard Biposto/Monoposto): £8,000 – £12,000 — These later production bikes often feature subtle updates and can offer better value for a well-maintained example.
- 999S/R Models (Various Years): £12,000 – £25,000+ — These higher-specification models, particularly the homologation 999R, command premium prices due to their enhanced components and rarity.
Common Issues to Check
- Desmodromic Valve Service: This is a crucial and costly maintenance item; ensure there is documented proof of recent belt changes and valve clearance checks.
- Electrical Gremlins: Check for intermittent issues with the dashboard, sensors, or lighting, which can sometimes occur on older Ducatis.
- Clutch Slave Cylinder: Leaking clutch slave cylinders are a known issue; inspect for fluid residue around the unit.
- Cooling System: Verify the radiator for leaks and ensure the cooling fan operates correctly, as overheating in traffic can be an issue.
- Fairing Condition: Inspect all fairing panels for cracks, especially around mounting points, and ensure all fasteners are present and secure.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 30 – 40 mpg (depending on riding style, as it's a high-performance superbike).
- Insurance Group: Very High (typically Group 17 out of 17 for superbikes, reflecting its performance and value).
- Servicing: Can be expensive, particularly the major 'Desmo' services involving valve clearance adjustments and cambelt changes every 2 years or 12,000 miles.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Ducati 999 (Standard): Ideal for riders who want the core 999 experience without the higher cost of the S or R models; still incredibly capable on road and track.
- Ducati 999S: Suited for enthusiasts seeking enhanced performance with Öhlins suspension, improved brakes, and a slightly more powerful engine for a sharper ride.
- Ducati 999R: The ultimate collector's choice and track weapon, featuring a larger bore engine, extensive carbon fibre, and race-spec components for the most uncompromising performance.
