About the Ducati 998

The Ducati 998 is an iconic superbike, representing the final iteration of the legendary 'Testastretta' V-twin superbikes that defined an era for the Italian manufacturer. Renowned for its stunning Massimo Tamburini design, exhilarating performance, and distinctive engine character, the 998 is a highly sought-after machine that appeals to collectors, enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a truly engaging riding experience on the road or track. It holds a strong reputation in the UK as a modern classic with significant heritage.

Why Buy a Used Ducati 998?

  • Collector's Item: The 998 is increasingly seen as a modern classic, especially the 'S' and 'R' variants, offering strong investment potential.
  • Iconic Design: Its timeless aesthetics, penned by Massimo Tamburini, ensure it stands out from the crowd and turns heads wherever it goes.
  • Engaging Performance: The 'Testastretta' engine provides a raw, visceral riding experience with abundant torque and a thrilling top-end rush.
  • Value for Money: While not cheap, a used 998 offers access to a high-performance, exotic superbike experience without the rapid depreciation of a brand-new model.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 2002–2003 (Standard Biposto/Monoposto): £8,000 – £12,000 — These models offer the classic 998 experience in good, rideable condition, perfect for an enthusiast.
  • 2002–2003 (998S): £12,000 – £18,000 — Expect a higher specification with Öhlins suspension and more power, appealing to those seeking enhanced performance.
  • 2002 (998R, Bostrom, Bayliss): £20,000 – £40,000+ — These rare homologation specials and limited editions command premium prices due to their exclusivity, exotic components, and collector status.

Common Issues to Check

  • Cam Belt Condition: Critical maintenance item; ensure belts have been changed every 2 years or 12,000 miles by a Ducati specialist.
  • Electrical System: Check for common issues with the voltage regulator/rectifier, which can lead to battery drain or charging problems.
  • Clutch Slave Cylinder: Prone to leaks, leading to a spongy clutch lever feel; inspect for fluid around the cylinder.
  • Fuel Tank Swelling: Early models, particularly in warmer climates or with specific fuel types, can suffer from the plastic tank swelling and deforming.
  • Rear Wheel Eccentric Hub: The single-sided swingarm's eccentric hub can seize if not properly maintained, making wheel removal difficult.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 30-40 mpg (highly dependent on riding style, as expected for a high-performance superbike).
  • Insurance Group: 50 (reflecting its high-performance superbike status and value, placing it in the highest insurance bracket typically seen for vehicles).
  • Servicing: Ducati's desmodromic valve service is complex and expensive, typically required every 6,000-7,500 miles, in addition to regular oil and filter changes and biennial belt replacements.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • 998 Biposto/Monoposto: Ideal for the rider seeking the quintessential 998 experience at a more accessible price point, offering superb looks and thrilling performance.
  • 998S: For the enthusiast desiring sharper handling and a slight power bump thanks to Öhlins suspension and revised engine components, perfect for spirited road riding or occasional track use.
  • 998R: The ultimate collector's item and track weapon, with a larger bore engine, race-bred components, and extreme rarity, suited for the serious collector or track-day connoisseur.
  • 998 Matrix/Bostrom/Bayliss: These special edition models are primarily for collectors, offering unique liveries and a slightly higher spec, great for those wanting a rare and visually distinctive bike.
