About the Ducati 750
The Ducati 750, often referring to popular models like the Monster 750 or SS 750 from the late 1990s and early 2000s, represents an iconic era for the Italian marque. These bikes are celebrated for their distinctive air-cooled L-twin engines, captivating exhaust note, and unmistakably Italian styling, making them a firm favourite amongst enthusiasts and those seeking a characterful ride in the UK. They appeal to riders who value heritage, engaging dynamics, and a strong sense of occasion over outright performance, establishing a reputation as accessible modern classics.
Why Buy a Used Ducati 750?
- Timeless Italian Styling: Ducati 750 models boast a design that remains highly desirable, offering classic lines and an aesthetic appeal that stands out from the crowd.
- Characterful L-Twin Engine: The air-cooled 750cc L-twin engine provides a unique power delivery, a fantastic soundtrack, and a truly engaging riding experience.
- Accessible Introduction to Ducati Ownership: Often available at a more approachable price point than larger displacement or newer Ducati models, they offer an authentic taste of the brand's heritage.
- Strong Community and Aftermarket Support: A passionate owner community and readily available parts mean these bikes are well-supported for maintenance and customisation.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1997–1999 (Early Monster/SS): £2,000 – £3,500 — At this price, you'll find examples in average to good condition, often with higher mileage or requiring some cosmetic attention.
- 2000–2002 (Mid-era Monster/SS): £2,800 – £4,500 — These models typically represent a good balance of condition and value, often featuring fuel injection and lower mileage examples.
- 2003–2005 (Later SS/Monster dark): £3,500 – £5,500 — Expect cleaner, well-maintained bikes, potentially with some desirable aftermarket upgrades and full service history.
Common Issues to Check
- Cam Belt Service History: Crucial for Ducati's Desmodromic valve system, ensure belts have been replaced every 2 years or 12,000 miles, as neglect can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
- Electrical Gremlins: Inspect wiring harnesses for wear, and check all lights, indicators, and the dashboard for intermittent faults, particularly around the rectifier/regulator.
- Clutch Slave Cylinder Leaks: A common issue where the clutch slave cylinder can leak fluid, leading to a loss of clutch pressure and requiring replacement.
- Fuel Tank Swelling/Corrosion: Older plastic fuel tanks can swell over time, affecting fitment, and internal corrosion can be an issue on steel tanks if left partially empty.
- Corrosion and Fastener Condition: Check for rust on the frame, swingarm, exhaust headers, and fasteners, as these bikes are prone to corrosion if not properly cared for, especially in the UK climate.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: Around 40-50 mpg, depending on riding style and model.
- Insurance Group: Typically falls into a higher motorcycle insurance group due to its performance capabilities, often Group 13-15 (motorcycle classification).
- Servicing: Ducati's Desmodromic valve servicing and cam belt changes are specialised and can be more expensive than average, usually required every 2 years or 12,000 miles.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Ducati Monster 750: The iconic naked roadster, ideal for urban riding, short commutes, and spirited weekend blasts, offering raw character and classic styling without a fairing.
- Ducati SS 750 (Supersport): A sportier, faired option designed for longer rides and sport touring, providing better wind protection and a more committed riding position for motorway comfort.
- Monster 750 Dark/Chrome: These special editions offer unique aesthetic touches like matte black finishes or chrome tanks, appealing to buyers looking for a distinct visual style within the Monster range.
