The bike specialists, trading standards award winners. Bike ID: #10431 Here we have for sale our stunning Ducati 748R in Giallo Yellow. Our bike is one of the earliest UK examples of the limited 748R run and are getting extremely difficult to find in this colour.
This bike is one of the best examples that we have had through our showroom in a long time. The bike we offer is a March 2000 UK registered model having covered 18,836 miles but having been restored to a very high standard and now looks like a bike that has covered 1800 miles, a real credit to its previous owners. The bike is fitted with Brembo brakes, Marschesini wheels, Ohlins rear and Showa front suspension and the original Termignoni exhaust as well as being supplied with 2 keys, the original handbook and brochure.
The bike will receive a full belt service and fesh MOT prior to sale. We cater for very specialist tastes and can usually source rare and coveted bikes that we do not have in stock and have lots of contacts throughout the world.
About the Ducati 748
The Ducati 748 is a revered Italian sportbike, instantly recognisable by its iconic Massimo Tamburini design, sharing much of its DNA with the larger 916. Characterised by its eager 748cc Desmodromic V-twin engine, trellis frame, and distinctive single-sided swingarm, it offers an engaging and visceral riding experience that appeals strongly to enthusiasts seeking a purer, more analogue connection with the road. In the UK, the 748 holds a strong reputation as a modern classic, celebrated for its stunning aesthetics, intoxicating sound, and thrilling performance on twisty B-roads or track days.
Why Buy a Used Ducati 748?
- Iconic Design and Heritage: Own a piece of motorcycling history with a design that remains breathtaking and timeless, making it a head-turner wherever it goes.
- Visceral Riding Experience: Experience the raw, analogue feel of a true performance V-twin, offering unparalleled feedback and a direct connection to the road.
- Potential for Appreciation: Well-maintained examples, especially rarer variants, have a strong track record of holding or increasing in value, making them a wise investment for collectors.
- Engaging Performance: Despite its age, the 748 still delivers an exhilarating ride with its lightweight chassis and rev-happy engine, perfect for spirited road riding or occasional track use.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1997–2000 (Biposto/early S): £6,500 – £9,500 — These early models offer an accessible entry point to 748 ownership, typically representing well-used but still cherished examples.
- 2001–2003 (S/SP/SPS): £8,000 – £12,000 — Mid-period and higher-specification S, SP, or SPS models often come with desirable upgrades and slightly better condition.
- Special Editions (R/Limited): £10,000 – £18,000+ — The highly sought-after 748R and other limited editions command premium prices due to their rarity, enhanced components, and track-focused performance.
Common Issues to Check
- Desmodromic Valve Service: The intricate desmodromic valve system requires precise and expensive servicing every 6,000-7,500 miles, which is critical for engine health.
- Electrical Gremlins: Older Ducatis can suffer from wiring harness issues, weak battery performance, and faulty sensors, leading to intermittent running problems.
- Clutch Slave Cylinder Leaks: The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is a known weak point, often leaking fluid and affecting clutch operation.
- Fairing Condition and Fasteners: Check for cracked or poorly repaired fairings, especially around mounting points, and ensure all fasteners are present and secure.
- Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter Issues: Blocked fuel filters or a failing fuel pump can lead to poor running, especially after periods of inactivity.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 35–45 mpg (depending on riding style)
- Insurance Group: High Performance (reflecting its sports bike status)
- Servicing: Generally expensive, especially the major desmodromic valve services. Specialist Ducati knowledge is often required.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Ducati 748 Biposto: The standard model, featuring a pillion seat, suitable for those who might occasionally carry a passenger and desire the classic 748 experience without the higher price tag of rarer variants.
- Ducati 748S (Strada): A more performance-oriented road version with upgrades like Showa suspension and lighter components, ideal for riders wanting a sharper handling experience for road use.
- Ducati 748SP/SPS (Sport Production/Sport Production Special): Rarer, more track-focused models with higher-spec engine components, Öhlins rear shock, and a single-seat unit, perfect for collectors or serious track enthusiasts.
- Ducati 748R: The ultimate, homologation-special track version, featuring a more powerful engine, full Öhlins suspension, and numerous lightweight components, appealing to collectors and those who demand the pinnacle of 748 performance for track days.
