Description

With us here at RFH Classics we are pleased to present this fascinating 1968 (G) Mini Cooper S Replica presented now in Tartan Red with a contrasting White Roof. We are lead to believe that the car was the subject of carefully planned and developed rebuild that took place in the early 80's to a specification that is remarkably close to that of an original Cooper S. The rebuild, which incorporated many genuine Cooper S components and we would highly recommend that you take the opportunity to inspect the car to understand how well it has been done.

The Tartan Red and White roof finish now on the car was undertaken around 2016 when the car changed hands and was purchased by the owner of a a Mini Specialist in North Somerset. Under Ian's ownership the car, which was White with a Black, was the subject of some extensive additional work and developed to be this car characterful and excitement replica of the iconic hot Mini but at a far more accessible level. He went on to maintain and own the car for around two years selling it in 2018 to the last registered keeper.

When the car was sold in 2018 it formed part of a small private collection of cars that were then subsequently parked up at the start of Covid and there the car stayed until earlier this year when we unearthed the car from its long term storage. Having collected the car from long term garage storage, we have since undertaken a careful programme of recommissioning the car including fuel drain, new brake master cylinder, service and a fresh motor test in preparation for sale. We understand that the mechanical specification was done faithful to Cooper S standards with a 1275cc 1300GT based engine complete with 11-stud head, twin 1¼" SU carburettors, Maniflow LCB manifold, twin fuel tank set up and Mini-Sport exhaust system.

The braking system is handled by the correct 7½" Cooper S discs while the suspension has been rebuilt on new subframes and retains the desirable dry set-up. Visually the exterior of the car is difficult to distinguish from the original car with period correct detailing such as the badges, bonnet strap, removable front grille, bullet style mirrors, white door number panels, front mud flaps, quad light set up and original style headlamp protectors. Internally the cabin is now trimmed in Red and Grey leather and features period Cooper S details including correct door cards, instruments, fittings and race preparation style dash.

To complete the overall look of the car it is fitted with Minilite wheels which perfectly finish off its purposeful stance. A substantial history file accompanies the Mini, including numerous old MOT certificates, a collection of receipts for parts and works and documents relating to work undertaken. The car, a highly convincing Cooper S replica that delivers all the period thrills of the real thing, but at a fraction of the price of an original is now ready for a new owner to enjoy and is going to be a true head turner wherever it goes.

About the Austin MINI

The Austin Mini, or simply 'Mini', is an automotive icon, revered for its ingenious space-saving design, go-kart handling, and undeniable British charm. Launched in 1959, it revolutionised small car design, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. In the UK, it holds a special place in the nation's heart, appealing to enthusiasts seeking a piece of motoring history, a fun weekend classic, or even a quirky daily driver that stands out from the crowd.

Why Buy a Used Austin MINI?

  • An undeniable British classic that offers an affordable entry point into vintage car ownership, with a strong community and club support network.
  • Its compact size and nimble handling make it incredibly fun to drive, especially on twisty B-roads, offering a direct and engaging experience.
  • The Mini is highly customisable, with a vast array of aftermarket parts available, allowing owners to personalise their vehicle to their taste.
  • Well-maintained examples can hold their value, and desirable early models or special editions can even appreciate over time, making it a potential investment.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Pre-1990 (Mk1-Mk5 projects/runners): £4,000 – £8,000 — These often require significant work but offer a low entry point into classic ownership for those looking for a project.
  • 1990–1996 (Carburettor models, e.g., Mayfair, Sprite): £8,000 – £14,000 — Generally in usable condition, offering a classic driving experience with a slightly more modern feel and greater availability.
  • 1996–2000 (MPI models, e.g., Cooper, Cooper SportPack): £14,000 – £25,000 — Representing the final evolution, these fuel-injected models offer better usability and often command premium prices, especially well-maintained Cooper variants.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust: Thoroughly inspect sills, A-panels, boot floor, scuttle panel, and around the headlights for common rust spots.
  • Subframe Condition: Check front and rear subframes for corrosion and structural integrity, as these are critical components.
  • Oil Leaks: Look for oil leaks from the engine, gearbox, and differential, which are common on older Minis.
  • Suspension: Examine the rubber cone suspension for perishing or collapse, and check for worn ball joints and bushes.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Test all lights, wipers, and dashboard instruments, as wiring can become brittle or corroded over time.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 30 – 40 mpg (depending on engine size, tune, and driving style)
  • Insurance Group: Typically specialist classic car insurance, which can be surprisingly affordable (not grouped in standard modern car ratings).
  • Servicing: Parts are widely available and relatively inexpensive, with many tasks being straightforward for DIY enthusiasts or specialist classic car garages.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Mini Mayfair / City: These more basic, carburettor-fed models from the 80s and early 90s offer a pure classic Mini experience at a more accessible price point, ideal for daily classic use or first-time owners.
  • Mini Cooper (Carburettor): Featuring a more powerful engine and sporty trim, these 1990s Coopers deliver an enhanced driving experience while retaining the classic carb-fed charm.
  • Mini Cooper (MPI): The Multi-Point Injection Coopers (1996-2000) are the most modern classic Minis, offering improved reliability, better emissions, and slightly more power, making them excellent for more frequent use.
  • Mini Cooper SportPack: Distinguished by its wider arches, larger wheels, and sportier suspension, this late model provides the most aggressive styling and a firm, performance-oriented ride.
