About the YAMAHA RD350

The Yamaha RD350 is an iconic two-stroke sports motorcycle that achieved legendary status in the UK, particularly during the 1970s and 80s. Renowned for its lightweight chassis, potent performance (especially for its era), and distinctive, exhilarating two-stroke exhaust note, it earned the affectionate nickname 'pocket rocket'. It appeals strongly to enthusiasts, collectors, and riders seeking a raw, engaging, and nostalgic riding experience that stands apart from modern four-stroke machines. The RD350's reputation is one of pure fun, often with a hint of wildness, making it a highly desirable classic.

Why Buy a Used Yamaha RD350?

  • Iconic Classic Status: The RD350, particularly the LC (liquid-cooled) and YPVS (Yamaha Power Valve System) models, is a genuine motorcycling legend that commands respect and admiration, making it a fantastic addition to any collection.
  • Pure, Engaging Riding Experience: With its lightweight design and eager two-stroke engine, the RD350 offers an incredibly direct and involving ride, providing a thrill that many modern bikes struggle to replicate.
  • Potential for Appreciation: Well-maintained and original RD350s have seen significant value increases in recent years, making them not just a joy to own but potentially a sound investment.
  • Strong Community and Parts Support: A passionate community of owners and specialists exists, meaning advice, clubs, and both new and reconditioned parts are generally available to keep these machines on the road.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Project/Restoration (e.g., 1970s-1980s): £3,000 – £6,000 — For a complete but non-running bike, or one requiring significant mechanical and cosmetic restoration.
  • Good Condition (e.g., 1980s RD350LC/YPVS): £7,000 – £12,000 — A rideable, well-maintained example that may be original or have had a sympathetic restoration, ready to enjoy.
  • Concours/Collector Grade (e.g., Low mileage, fully restored RD350LC/YPVS): £12,000 – £20,000+ — Immaculate, show-winning examples, often with low mileage or a professional, no-expense-spared restoration.

Common Issues to Check

  • Engine Wear: Two-stroke engines can wear pistons, rings, and bores, leading to a loss of compression and performance. Check for excessive smoke, rattles, and perform a compression test.
  • YPVS System (on applicable models): Ensure the Power Valve System operates smoothly; carbon build-up can cause it to stick, affecting power delivery and potentially causing engine damage.
  • Rust and Corrosion: Pay close attention to the fuel tank (internal rust is common), frame, swingarm, and exhaust expansion chambers, which are prone to rust, especially if not stored correctly.
  • Brakes and Suspension: Original components may be worn or seized. Check for leaking fork seals, seized brake calipers, corroded lines, and worn shock absorbers.
  • Electrical System: Age can lead to brittle wiring, poor connections, and failing components like stators, rectifiers, or ignition coils, resulting in starting or charging issues.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 30–45 mpg (when ridden sedately), though this can drop significantly when the bike is ridden hard due to its two-stroke nature.
  • Insurance Group: Typically falls under specialist classic motorcycle insurance, which can often be surprisingly affordable compared to modern bikes, depending on your age and riding history.
  • Servicing: Requires specific two-stroke maintenance, including regular spark plug changes and occasional top-end rebuilds. It's often best entrusted to a specialist due to the unique engine characteristics.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • RD350B (Air-cooled models, 1973–1975): The original 'coffin tank' models offer a very raw and authentic 70s two-stroke experience. Best for purists who appreciate the foundational model.
  • RD350LC (Liquid-Cooled, 1980–1983): The game-changer that redefined the class. Known for its sharper handling and iconic styling, it's highly sought after by collectors and riders wanting the most classic 'pocket rocket' feel.
  • RD350 YPVS (Power Valve System, e.g., F2, N2, 1983–1995): These later models feature Yamaha's Power Valve System, offering a broader and more usable powerband. They are generally more refined than the LC and make for a great fast road bike or track day classic.
