About the BMW R NINET

Looking for a retro-styled roadster with modern performance? The used BMW R Ninet offers a compelling blend of classic aesthetics and BMW engineering. Introduced in 2014 to celebrate 90 years of BMW Motorrad, it quickly became a favourite for riders seeking a customisable, characterful machine. This guide will walk you through what to consider when buying a used R Ninet in the UK.

Used BMW R Ninet Price Guide (UK 2025/26)

Prices for the BMW R Ninet can vary significantly based on model year, mileage, condition, and any fitted accessories. The original R Ninet (2014-2016) often fetches lower prices, while later Euro 4 and Euro 5 compliant models, particularly Pure, Scrambler, and Urban G/S variants, command a premium.

Model Variant Year Range Realistic UK Price Range (£)
R Ninet (Original, Euro 3) 2014-2016 £6,500 - £8,500
R Ninet (Euro 4) 2017-2020 £8,000 - £10,500
R Ninet (Euro 5+) 2021-Present £10,000 - £13,500
R Ninet Pure/Scrambler/Urban G/S 2017-Present £7,500 - £12,000

Key Features & Specifications

  • Engine Size: 1,170cc air/oil-cooled flat-twin Boxer engine (Euro 3: 110hp; Euro 4/5: 109hp)
  • Category: Roadster/Naked (with variations for Scrambler, Pure, Urban G/S)
  • Fuel: Petrol
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual, shaft drive
  • Wet Weight: Approx. 221-223kg (varies slightly by model/year)
  • Seat Height: Approx. 805mm (adjustable via official BMW accessories, lower seat options available)

What to Look For When Buying Used

The R Ninet is generally robust, but there are specific points to check:

  • ABS Sensor Cables: Early Euro 3 models (2014-2016) had instances of ABS sensor cables rubbing and failing. Check for wear or replaced cables.
  • Corrosion: While BMW finishes are usually good, look closely at areas like the engine fins, exhaust headers (discolouration is normal, pitting is not), and fasteners for signs of corrosion, especially if stored outdoors.
  • Fork Seals: Inspect fork stanchions for leaks around the seals.
  • Service History: Crucial. Main dealer or reputable specialist history preferred. Service intervals are typically 6,000 miles or annually, with major services (valve clearance checks) at 12,000-mile intervals.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Check all lights, indicators, and dashboard functions. Some owners report minor electrical quirks; ensure everything works as expected.
  • Tyres: Check for even wear. Shaft drive can sometimes lead to slightly uneven rear tyre wear if not set up correctly or maintained.
  • Customisation: Many R Ninets are customised. Ensure any modifications are professionally fitted and declared for insurance purposes. Poorly executed modifications can cause issues.

Running Costs & Insurance

  • Typical Insurance Group: Group 14-16 out of 17 (UK motorcycle groups). This can vary based on rider age, location, and specific model (e.g., Scrambler may be slightly lower). Expect premiums for experienced riders to be in the £200-£500 range, but obtain a personalised quote.
  • Fuel Economy: Real-world MPG typically ranges from 45-55 mpg (Imperial). The 17-litre tank gives a realistic range of 150-200 miles between fill-ups.
  • Servicing Costs: BMW main dealer servicing is not cheap. Expect minor services (oil, filters) to be £200-£350, with major services (including valve clearances) potentially £500-£800+. Independent BMW specialists can offer more competitive rates.
  • ULEZ/Clean Air Zones: All BMW R Ninet models (Euro 3, 4, 5) are compliant with current and planned UK Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) and Clean Air Zones (CAZ) due to their engine age and emissions standards.

Is the BMW R Ninet Right For You?

The R Ninet is ideal for the rider who:

  • Appreciates iconic retro styling combined with modern mechanical reliability.
  • Seeks a characterful Boxer engine with ample torque.
  • Enjoys customising their motorcycle – the R Ninet is designed with modularity in mind.
  • Wants a premium-feel roadster for spirited riding, weekend blasts, and shorter tours.

Alternatives to consider:

  • Triumph Thruxton R/RS: Offers a British take on the café racer, often praised for handling.
  • Ducati Scrambler 1100: Another retro-inspired option with Italian flair and a L-twin engine.
  • Moto Guzzi V7/V9: Smaller capacity but offers a unique transverse V-twin experience at a lower price point.
  • Kawasaki Z900RS: Japanese reliability and performance in a retro package.
