Description

The bike specialists, trading standards award winners. Bike ID: #10673 We are pleased to offer for sale our stunning Norton F1 JPS, an iconic British bike and a model we have not had through our showroom for many years. These are a super rare bike with only a small number made, believed to be around 140 F1s between 1990-1992.

The F1 was expensive when new (£13,000 in 1990 equivilant today would cost £31,000) and remains a collector's item today. Our 1990 UK example in concors condition and shows just 8,728 miles from new and amazingly 1 owner from new. The bike was fully restored in 2025 and comes with various invoices showing £11,526 spent on the work carried out, two keys, original handbook and the original showroom brochure.

The Norton F1 (also known as the P55 or F1 JPS) is a rare late-1980s/early-1990s British sports motorcycle powered by a liquid-cooled twin-rotor Wankel rotary engine, produced as a road-going replica of Norton's successful RCW588 race bike. It is one of the few production motorcycles ever fitted with a Wankel rotary engine and is instantly recognizable in its black/gold/grey John Player Special (JPS) livery, matching the tobacco-sponsored race team bikes. Norton had been developing Wankel rotary engines since the early 1970s and in the late 1980s, Norton engineer Brian Crighton developed a competitive racing version which led to the RCW588 race bike.

From 1989, riders including Steve Spray, Trevor Nation, Robert Dunlop, and others achieved strong results in British championships. Steve Hislop later won the 1992 Senior TT on a Norton rotary. We are a family-owned company who pride ourselves on the quality of our Motorcycles and all of them are carefully chosen, handpicked enthusiast pre-owned examples that are always HPI Clear for your peace of mind.

We offer all the usual used Motorcycle Dealer facilities such as Low-rate finance and extended warranties and operate a no pressure environment where you can relax and enjoy good old-fashioned service with a smile. We have just upgraded our Indoor Showroom where you can see Motorcycles you sometimes can only dream of seeing and sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves when we get certain bikes in as we would like to keep them all! We cater for very specialist tastes and can usually source rare and coveted bikes that we do not have in stock and have lots of contacts throughout the world.

  • Unparalleled Rarity: With only around 100 units ever produced, owning an F1 means possessing one of the most exclusive motorcycles in the world, making it a true collector's item.
  • Unique Rotary Engine Experience: The 588cc liquid-cooled Wankel rotary engine offers an incredibly smooth, vibration-free power delivery distinct from traditional piston engines.
  • Iconic British Heritage: The F1 embodies Norton's innovative spirit and successful racing history, particularly its TT victories, making it a significant piece of British motorcycling legacy.
  • Potential for Appreciation: Due to its extreme rarity, historical significance, and unique engineering, a well-maintained Norton F1 is highly likely to increase in value over time.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1990–1992 (Fair condition, needing restoration): £25,000 – £40,000 — A project bike for the dedicated enthusiast, offering a challenging but rewarding restoration opportunity.
  • 1990–1992 (Good original condition): £45,000 – £70,000 — A presentable and rideable example, suitable for occasional use and a strong investment.
  • 1990–1992 (Pristine, low mileage, concours): £75,000 – £120,000+ — An investment-grade specimen, often having undergone meticulous restoration or preserved in exceptional original condition.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rotary Engine Health: Inspect for consistent compression, oil consumption, and any signs of overheating, as Wankel engines require specific attention.
  • Fuel System Integrity: Check the carburettors and fuel lines for leaks, blockages, or deterioration, which can be complex and costly to resolve.
  • Electrical System: Ageing wiring, connectors, and components can lead to intermittent electrical faults; ensure all lights and instrumentation function correctly.
  • Suspension and Brakes: Original components may require refurbishment or replacement; check for fork seal leaks, effective braking, and responsive handling.
  • Parts Availability: Be aware that many parts are unique to the F1 and can be extremely difficult and expensive to source, making originality and completeness crucial.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Around 25-35 mpg (miles per gallon), as the rotary engine is not inherently designed for fuel efficiency, especially when ridden spiritedly.
  • Insurance Group: Very High (Specialist classic motorcycle insurance required, often requiring agreed valuation and secure storage).
  • Servicing: Highly specialised and expensive, requiring mechanics familiar with Wankel rotary engines. Parts are rare and costly, and general maintenance should be performed by experts.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Concours/Investment Grade: For the discerning collector seeking the absolute best, a pristine F1 offers museum quality and the highest potential for value appreciation.
  • Ridable Original: Ideal for enthusiasts who want to experience the unique F1 ride, an original but well-maintained example provides a balance between usability and historical integrity.
  • Project/Restoration Candidate: Suited for skilled mechanics or those with significant resources, a project F1 allows for a hands-on restoration and the satisfaction of bringing a legend back to life.
