Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1950s Featherbed Models (e.g., Dominator 88, 99): £10,000 – £25,000+ — These are the most coveted and represent the pinnacle of post-war Norton design, with pristine examples commanding top prices for their originality and show-quality restoration.
- 1960s Later Models (e.g., Dominator 650SS): £7,000 – £15,000 — Offering a more potent and refined ride for their era, these bikes typically present good value for a rideable classic with a strong performance heritage.

Common Issues to Check
- Oil Leaks: Being a classic British twin, minor oil weeping from engine and gearbox seals is common; check for excessive leakage.
- Electrical System: Original Lucas electrics can be temperamental; inspect wiring for signs of perishing, amateur repairs, or consider upgrades.
- Frame Integrity: Especially on Featherbed models, check the frame for cracks, particularly around the headstock and swingarm pivots, due to age and potential stress.
- Engine Condition: Listen for excessive mechanical noise, check for smoke from the exhaust, and enquire about recent engine rebuilds or maintenance.
- Clutch & Gearbox: Test the clutch for smooth engagement and check for any difficulty in selecting gears, indicating potential wear.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: Approx. 40-50 mpg (depending on tuning and riding style).
- Insurance Group: Specialist Classic Insurance (Rating Varies).
- Servicing: Requires specialist knowledge and often a DIY approach or engagement with independent classic motorcycle mechanics.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Dominator 88 (497cc, Featherbed): A nimble and quintessential Featherbed twin, ideal for purists wanting the earliest, most classic riding experience.
- Dominator 99 (596cc, Featherbed): Offers a great balance of power and handling within the Featherbed frame, excellent for those wanting a capable and engaging classic.
- Dominator 650SS (646cc): Known for its sportier performance and robust engine, this variant suits riders looking for a more spirited and responsive classic Norton.
- Norton Atlas (745cc): While a distinct model, the Atlas evolved from the Dominator line, offering more displacement and power for those desiring a larger capacity British twin from the era.
