Common Issues

The 790 Duke is generally a reliable machine, but like any motorcycle, it's worth being aware of potential quirks:

  • Fuel Pump Issues: Some earlier models experienced issues with the fuel pump. Check for any recall notices or evidence of replacement.
  • Clutch Slave Cylinder: A small number of owners have reported leaks from the clutch slave cylinder.
  • Indicator Switches: Some riders find the indicator switchgear a little fiddly, especially with gloves on.
  • Leaky Radiator Hoses: Check for any signs of coolant leaks around the radiator hoses.

Regular servicing and addressing any minor issues promptly should keep your 790 Duke running smoothly.

Running Costs

  • Insurance: Varies greatly depending on your age, location, and riding history. Expect it to be in the mid-to-high range for a 790cc performance bike.
  • Fuel Economy: You can expect to achieve around 50-60 mpg, depending on your riding style.
  • Servicing: KTM's recommended service intervals are typically every 10,000 km (approx. 6,000 miles) for major services, with oil changes more frequent. Main dealer servicing can be pricier than independent garages.
  • Tyres: Expect to replace rear tyres every 3,000-5,000 miles, depending on riding style and tyre choice.

Variants

While the base 790 Duke is the most common, there were a couple of variations:

  • KTM 790 Duke (Standard): The model described throughout this guide.
  • KTM 790 Adventure/Adventure R: These are distinct models aimed at the adventure touring market, sharing the engine but with completely different chassis and suspension setups. Not to be confused with the Duke.

It's important to note that KTM has since moved to the 890 Duke range, which replaces the 790 Duke, offering more power and refined features. However, the 790 Duke remains a fantastic option on the used market.
