About the Suzuki Sx4
The Suzuki SX4, often seen as a practical and robust compact crossover, carved a niche for itself in the UK market by offering a blend of hatchback agility with optional all-wheel-drive capability. Known for its no-nonsense design and reliable mechanics, it appeals to buyers seeking an affordable, versatile vehicle capable of handling both urban environments and light rural conditions. Its reputation is built on dependability, surprising off-road prowess for its size, and excellent value for money.
Why Buy a Used Suzuki SX4?
- Exceptional Reliability: Suzuki has a strong reputation for building dependable vehicles, and the SX4 is no exception, often providing many years of trouble-free motoring.
- Affordable 4x4 Capability: Many SX4 models come with an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, offering enhanced traction and confidence in adverse weather without the running costs of a larger SUV.
- Practical and Spacious: Despite its compact footprint, the SX4 offers a surprisingly roomy interior and a decent boot, making it a practical choice for small families or those needing versatile cargo space.
- Great Value for Money: Used SX4 models represent excellent value, providing a capable and reliable car at a very accessible price point, particularly given its standard equipment levels.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 2006–2009: £2,000 – £4,000 — At this price, you'll find early models, likely with higher mileage, but still offering robust and affordable motoring.
- 2010–2012: £4,000 – £6,000 — This range offers a good balance, with well-maintained facelifted models often available, providing more modern features and lower mileage.
- 2013–2014: £6,000 – £7,500 — The newest and final models before the SX4 S-Cross arrived, these command higher prices but offer the freshest condition and lowest mileage.
Common Issues to Check
- Rust on Underside and Exhaust: Particularly on older models, inspect the sills, subframes, and exhaust system for signs of corrosion, especially if the vehicle has been used off-road or in coastal areas.
- Clutch Wear: Manual gearboxes, especially in 4x4 variants that have seen heavy use or towing, can experience premature clutch wear; check for a high biting point or slip.
- Suspension Bushings and Mounts: Listen for knocking or creaking noises over bumps, indicating worn suspension components, which is common given the car's utilitarian nature.
- 4x4 System Engagement (if applicable): Ensure the all-wheel-drive system engages and disengages smoothly by testing the different drive modes if present.
- Air Conditioning Functionality: A common complaint can be a weak or non-functioning air conditioning system, so ensure it blows cold when tested.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 1.6L Petrol (2WD): 40-45 mpg; 1.6L Petrol (4x4): 38-42 mpg; 1.9/2.0 DDiS Diesel: 48-55 mpg.
- Insurance Group: Typically Group 10-15, making it an affordable car to insure for many drivers.
- Servicing: Generally inexpensive thanks to Suzuki's reputation for reliability and readily available, reasonably priced parts; a good independent garage can handle most servicing needs.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- 1.6 VVT Petrol (2WD): Ideal for urban drivers or those who don't need 4x4 capability, offering decent fuel economy and lower purchase costs.
- 1.6 VVT Petrol (4x4): The most popular choice for a blend of versatility, offering excellent traction for winter conditions or light rural tracks without significantly higher running costs than the 2WD.
- 2.0 DDiS Diesel (4x4): Best for high-mileage drivers or those who frequently tow, providing superior torque, better motorway economy, and robust all-wheel-drive performance.
- SZ4 / GLX Trim: These higher trim levels typically include desirable features like alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning, and keyless entry, enhancing comfort and convenience.
