SUNROOF. The 2 front seats have been removed for reupholstering, 1 has been done but the 2nd has not but does come with the fabric so the car currently has recaros fitted in the front with the fishnet headrest minus the fishnet so these will remain in the car and come with the 2 original seats, if the buyer prefers we can complete the seats and supply car with original seats in place. When the car was purchased by the current owner it had been off the road for a number of years and there had been a number of interior parts removed over that time including the clocks, these where replaced during the resto with a set from a gti and had 111,060 miles recorded, once the car was complete other than a test drive and short drive to the mot station it had its first post resto mot with a recorded mileage of 111,072.
Since resto the car has covered under 2000 miles so overall we estimate mileage of no more than 160,000. Written confirmation is present from the owner. The current mot is until 1/10/26 and advisory free but we are happy to put a new mot on the car for the buyer.
About the Peugeot 205
The Peugeot 205 is a legendary supermini, widely considered one of the finest small cars ever produced and a true icon of 1980s and 90s motoring. Famed for its exceptional chassis, agile handling, and engaging driving experience, it quickly became a best-seller and a rally champion. While standard models offer charming, simple motoring, it's the high-performance GTi variants that cemented its reputation as a driver's car legend. It appeals to enthusiasts, first-time classic car owners, and those looking for a characterful, analogue driving experience that modern cars often lack.
Why Buy a Used Peugeot 205?
- Classic Status: The 205 is now firmly established as a desirable classic, with excellent provenance and a strong following, particularly for the GTi models.
- Engaging Drive: Even in standard guise, the 205 offers a raw, communicative, and immensely fun driving experience that harks back to simpler automotive times.
- Simple Mechanics: Many models feature relatively straightforward engineering, making them accessible for home mechanics and generally less costly to maintain than more complex modern vehicles.
- Affordable Classic Entry: While GTi prices have soared, non-GTi variants still offer an affordable entry point into classic car ownership, providing retro charm without the hefty price tag.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1983–1988 (Early models/projects): £1,500 – £4,000 — These often represent project cars or basic, high-mileage runners that require attention to become prime examples.
- 1989–1998 (Later standard models): £3,500 – £7,500 — Typically well-maintained standard 205s (e.g., 1.1, 1.4 GL/GR/Style) in good, usable condition with a valid MOT.
- All Years (Premium/GTi entry): £8,000 – £30,000+ — This bracket covers exceptionally preserved standard models, rare variants, and the highly sought-after 1.6 and 1.9 GTi models, with top-tier examples fetching significantly more.
Common Issues to Check
- Rust: Thoroughly inspect sills, rear wheel arches, chassis rails, suspension mounting points, and around the sunroof (if fitted) for corrosion.
- Rear Beam Axle: A notorious weak point, look for excessive rear wheel camber, knocking noises, or a 'wobbly' rear end, indicating worn bearings or bushes.
- Electrics: Age can lead to common electrical gremlins, including faulty dashboard gauges, intermittent lights, and temperamental central locking.
- Gearbox Whine/Crunch: Particularly on older or high-mileage models, listen for excessive whine from the gearbox or a crunch when selecting gears, indicating wear.
- Oil Leaks: Check for oil leaks from the engine, especially around the rocker cover gasket, sump, and crankshaft seals, which are common with age.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 35–45 mpg (varies significantly by engine size and driving style, with smaller engines and diesels at the higher end).
- Insurance Group: 7–20 (highly dependent on engine size and variant; GTi models are significantly higher, though classic car insurance can offer savings).
- Servicing: Relatively affordable for basic servicing due to simple mechanics and widely available parts. Specialist knowledge is recommended for more complex classic car issues or GTi maintenance.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- 205 Junior/Style: Ideal for those seeking an affordable entry into classic car ownership, offering basic, reliable transport with quintessential 205 charm.
- 205 GL/GR/GT: A good balance of everyday usability and comfort for its era, these mid-range models are robust and offer a slightly more refined experience than the entry-level variants.
- 205 XS: A 'warm hatch' precursor to the GTi, the XS offers a sprightly 1.4-litre engine and sportier trim, providing a taste of the GTi's fun factor without the associated price premium.
- 205 GTi (1.6 & 1.9): The ultimate collector's item and driver's car. The 1.6 GTi is revvier and more agile, while the 1.9 GTi offers more torque and cruising ability, both delivering an intoxicating analogue driving experience.
