Description
With us at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this lovely 1979 (T) MG Midget 1500 Convertible, finished in Leyland White with Black Vinyl trim. Recently taken in part exchange against one of our MGB Roadsters, this is a smart and very usable example of the little MG that has introduced generations of owners to affordable open-top classic motoring. The previous owner purchased the Midget approximately two years ago and used it regularly for local shows, club runs and longer journeys.
In fact, so confident was he in the car that, when he first came to view the MGB Roadster that ultimately replaced it, he drove the Midget around 100 miles each way to visit us - a 200-mile round trip made all the more impressive by the fact that he was 84 years old. Having enjoyed the Midget, his decision to move up to an MGB Roadster was simply the next step in his classic MG ownership. Since arriving with us we have carried out a programme of preparation, including removing the interior trim to allow us to inspect the floors before carefully refitting it using a selection of new trim parts to freshen the cabin.
We have also fitted a set of Polished Anthracite Minilite-style alloy wheels, which work particularly well against the Leyland White bodywork and give the car a slightly more sporting appearance than the original-style Rostyle wheels. The Midget was the subject of an older restoration, believed to have been undertaken by a former owner approximately six or seven years ago. Unfortunately, the detailed records relating to that work have not accompanied the car, so rather than make assumptions about what was undertaken at the time, we have carried out our own additional checks during preparation.
The restoration has stood the test of time well and the car presents very nicely today. Powered by the familiar 1493cc four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox, the later 1500 Midget offers wonderfully straightforward classic motoring. Its compact dimensions, light controls and simple mechanical layout make it an easy car to get to know, while with the hood lowered there are few more uncomplicated ways of enjoying a summer afternoon on a favourite stretch of road.
That also makes the Midget an excellent proposition for someone considering their first classic car. It is small enough not to feel intimidating, mechanically straightforward and supported by excellent parts availability and a large enthusiast following. Equally, for the more established classic owner, it makes a perfect fun car to have tucked away in the garage, ready to bring out whenever the weather and opportunity allow.
Prior to leaving us, the Midget will be serviced and independently MOT tested ready for its next owner. As a 1979 car it qualifies for Historic Vehicle road tax and ULEZ exemption and is also MOT exempt, although as with our other qualifying classics we prefer to have the car independently tested before delivery. It will also be supplied with our 3-month major mechanical warranty and a vehicle history certificate confirming no outstanding finance or recorded insurance loss.
We recommend the use of premium unleaded E5 fuel. RFH Classics are Bedfordshire's largest independent classic car dealer, with over 35 years' experience supplying quality vehicles to customers throughout the UK. Unable to visit us?

Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1961–1970 (MkI/MkII/early MkIII): £5,000 – £12,000 — These early chrome bumper models offer raw classic appeal, often requiring some restoration or ongoing maintenance.
- 1971–1974 (late MkIII 1275cc): £7,000 – £15,000 — Highly desirable chrome bumper versions with the more powerful 1275cc engine, typically in better, more usable condition.
- 1975–1979 (Midget 1500 'Rubber Bumper'): £4,000 – £10,000 — Often mechanically sound with the Triumph 1500 engine, offering a slightly more modern feel but with less traditional styling.
Common Issues to Check
- Extensive Rust: Critical areas include sills, wheel arches, front wings, boot floor, and chassis outriggers; check thoroughly, especially around jacking points.
- Electrical Gremlins: Typical Lucas system issues such as unreliable gauges, indicator problems, and charging faults are common.
- Oil Leaks: Common from the engine (especially front and rear seals), gearbox, and differential; check for drips under the car.
- Worn Suspension & Steering: Check for play in kingpins, steering rack, and tired suspension bushes affecting handling and tyre wear.
- Soft Top & Interior Condition: Inspect for rips, leaks, and brittle windows in the hood, and general wear to seats, carpets, and dashboard components.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 25-35 mpg (depending on engine variant and driving style)
- Insurance Group: Specialist Classic Car Insurance (specific modern groups do not apply)
- Servicing: Relatively inexpensive and straightforward, with many routine tasks manageable by a competent home mechanic. Parts are widely available and affordable.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- MKI/MKII (948cc/1098cc): For the purist seeking the earliest, most original Midget experience, offering a true vintage feel albeit with less power.
- MKIII (1275cc, Chrome Bumper): The most popular and arguably best-balanced variant, offering the traditional chrome looks with a more capable and lively 1275cc A-Series engine.
- Midget 1500 (Rubber Bumper): A practical choice for those wanting a slightly more relaxed and torquier classic, often more affordable and featuring the Triumph 1500 engine.
