About the MG Mga

The MG MGA is a truly iconic British sports car, celebrated for its elegant lines, engaging driving dynamics, and status as a timeless classic. Launched in the mid-1950s, it marked a significant departure from MG's pre-war styling, offering a sleek, aerodynamic design that captured the spirit of post-war optimism. In the UK market, the MGA is highly regarded by enthusiasts and collectors alike, appealing to those seeking an authentic open-top roadster experience, a slice of motoring heritage, and a vehicle that often attracts admiration wherever it goes.

Why Buy a Used MG MGA?

  • **Timeless Design:** The MGA boasts a universally admired, flowing design that looks as captivating today as it did over sixty years ago, making it a standout classic.
  • **Engaging Driving Experience:** Offering unadulterated, analogue motoring, the MGA provides direct steering, a distinctive engine note, and a connection to the road that modern cars often lack.
  • **Strong Club Support & Parts Availability:** With a passionate owner base and excellent support from dedicated clubs and specialists, parts are generally readily available, making maintenance manageable.
  • **Potential for Appreciation:** As a sought-after British classic, well-maintained and original MGAs often hold their value well and can even appreciate over time, making it a sound investment.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Pre-1960 (Project/Driver Quality): £15,000 – £25,000 — At this price point, you can find cars that are complete and running, but likely require significant restoration or ongoing mechanical attention.
  • 1960–1962 (Good Condition Drivers): £25,000 – £40,000 — These are typically well-maintained examples, ready to enjoy immediately, with solid bodywork and a sound mechanical basis.
  • Fully Restored/Concours Examples: £40,000 – £60,000+ — These are top-tier cars, either professionally restored to a high standard or exceptionally original, commanding premium prices.

Common Issues to Check

  • **Rust:** A primary concern, particularly in the sills, floorpans, chassis outriggers, front wings, and boot floor. Check thoroughly for repairs and evidence of corrosion.
  • **Engine Health:** Listen for excessive tappet noise, check for oil leaks (especially around the rear main seal), and ensure it holds temperature correctly. Carburettor tuning can also be an issue.
  • **Gearbox:** Check for stiff changes or crunching in second gear, which can indicate worn synchromesh. Overdrive units, if fitted, should engage smoothly.
  • **Electrics:** The Lucas electrics can be temperamental. Check all lights, gauges, and the charging system. Inspect the wiring loom for originality, hacks, or deterioration.
  • **Suspension and Steering:** Look for excessive play in the steering box and worn kingpins or bushes in the front suspension, which can affect handling and tyre wear.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Typically 25–35 mpg, depending on engine tune, driving style, and specific variant.
  • Insurance Group: MGAs fall into specialist classic car insurance categories, often offering favourable rates for agreed value, limited mileage policies, and garaged vehicles.
  • Servicing: Relatively straightforward for a competent DIY mechanic or classic car specialist. Parts are generally available and reasonably priced, though regular maintenance is key.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • MGA 1500 Roadster: The original and most common open-top version, perfect for those seeking the quintessential MGA experience with its charming 1.5-litre engine.
  • MGA 1600 Roadster: Offers more power from its 1.6-litre engine and benefits from front disc brakes, making it a more practical choice for modern road conditions.
  • MGA 1600 MkII Roadster: The final and most refined roadster, featuring further engine improvements and minor styling updates, representing the pinnacle of the standard MGA range.
  • MGA Coupé: A rarer, fixed-head variant offering more weather protection and a distinctive, slightly more aerodynamic profile, appealing to those wanting something a bit different or a more secure classic.
  • MGA Twin Cam: A highly desirable and rare high-performance model with a unique twin-overhead-cam engine, primarily for serious collectors and enthusiasts due to its complexity and significant value.
