About the Ford Granada

The Ford Granada, a quintessential executive car of the 1970s and 80s, offered British buyers a blend of comfort, space, and a touch of luxury. Renowned for its smooth ride, strong engine options (particularly the V6s), and rear-wheel-drive dynamics, the Granada was a popular choice for families and business professionals alike. While now a cherished classic, it maintains a strong following among enthusiasts in the UK market, valued for its distinctive styling and robust engineering.

Why Buy a Used Ford Granada?

  • The Granada has achieved genuine classic status, making well-preserved examples excellent appreciating assets for collectors and enthusiasts.
  • Offering a spacious interior and a comfortable, absorbent ride, the Granada remains a highly enjoyable cruiser for longer journeys or weekend outings.
  • With its traditional rear-wheel-drive layout and a range of robust engines, particularly the characterful V6 units, it delivers an engaging and distinctively classic driving experience.
  • Its relatively straightforward mechanicals make it an appealing prospect for DIY maintenance and restoration, with a strong community and specialist parts suppliers.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1972–1977 (Mk1): £8,000 – £25,000 — These early examples, particularly V6-engined models, are highly sought after and can command premium prices for cars in excellent condition.
  • 1978–1985 (Mk2): £5,000 – £18,000 — More angular and refined than its predecessor, the Mk2 offers a slightly more accessible entry point into Granada ownership, with good usable examples widely available.
  • Exceptional/Restored Examples: £15,000 – £35,000+ — Concours-level cars, rare Ghia X specifications, or those with significant history and recent restoration can fetch top prices from discerning collectors.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust: Thoroughly inspect sills, wheel arches, boot floor, chassis rails, and around the front and rear screens, as rust is a common enemy of older Fords.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Age can lead to wiring degradation, causing issues with lights, gauges, central locking, and electric windows; check all electronics thoroughly.
  • Carburettor Issues (on earlier models): Stalling, poor idling, or hesitant acceleration can point to worn or maladjusted carburettors.
  • Suspension Wear: Listen for knocks or creaks from the suspension, indicative of worn bushes, ball joints, or shock absorbers, affecting ride comfort and handling.
  • Power Steering Leaks: Check for leaks from the power steering pump or hoses, which can lead to a heavy steering feel or pump failure if ignored.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Expect 18–25 mpg depending on engine size and driving style, significantly less for the larger V6 engines in city driving.
  • Insurance Group: Typically falls into specialist classic car insurance categories, which can be surprisingly affordable for enthusiasts with limited mileage policies.
  • Servicing: Generally straightforward for experienced mechanics, with many common parts still available, though specialist knowledge is beneficial for optimal running.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • 2.0L/2.3L Saloon: Ideal for those seeking a more economical entry into classic Granada ownership, offering decent performance for leisurely cruising.
  • 2.8i Ghia X Saloon: The top-tier luxury model, often featuring leather, electric amenities, and the powerful 2.8-litre fuel-injected V6, perfect for collectors wanting the ultimate Granada experience.
  • Estate: Combining classic style with impressive practicality, the Granada Estate offers vast boot space, making it a functional yet stylish choice for classic car show attendees or practical enthusiasts.
  • Cologne V6 Models (2.3L, 2.8L): Prized for their smooth power delivery and distinctive engine note, these variants offer a more engaging and authentic 'executive Ford' driving feel.
