Description
1992 - J Reg Citroen BX GTI (16v) This Phase 2 BX GTI (16v) has been with its current owner since 2017, and having had thousands spent during that time on mechanical and body maintenance and repairs, rendering it a solid and usable classic/retro example. Affectionately known as 'Valerie' she is offered for sale on behalf of her current owner. General information: Registration Number: J996 SPD MOT to January 2027 2 Keys HPI Clear Original handbook pack and a folder full of invoices.
Major mechanical and body (welding) work carried out in the last few years - she is a good solid example that drives extremely well with no knocks or bangs. She starts well from both hot and cold and does not smoke. Mechanical work has been carried out mainly by either Chevronics or Sparrow Automotive (both Citroen specialists) and in August 2024 the bodykit was removed, inner sills repaired along with the jacking points and chassis outriggers (all common areas for corrosion) and the outer sills were replaced.
Most recently (May 2025) she has just been into the local Citroen specialist - Chevronics, for a general check over and some remedial works, these being - both front strut top mounts replaced and new window moldings fitted. Here is the full low down from her current owner: I've owned J996SPD since Feb 2017 and had a lot of work done since. A couple of minor things; the windscreen will need investigation as despite having a new windscreen and the surround tidied up/roof painted the new screen has the 'white cloud' appearing at the bottom, and whilst very presentable, the paintwork isnt perfect although she is in my opinion an honest usable classic who wears her age very well.
Those things mentioned, I think that's the worst of it. The front inner wings and under the washer bottle was welded up when the screen work was done (Chevronic Centre LTD) . It's been near fully re-piped bar front brake pipes which are in good order, front & rear height correctors, HP pump etc reconditioned at the same time, new discs, pads and all calipers overhauled, new custom built alloy radiator as the old one was tired (Sparrow Automotive).
I had the cam belt replaced when i bought her (at 121k miles). Alloy wheels refurbed and new tyres with about 1500miles use. 'Valerie' as she's been named drives really well and the engine is strong, spheres react well and recently has a new accumulator sphere fitted. Pump tick is about 15 seconds.
Battery is 2 years old and I have spare dizzy cap and rotor, spark plugs, coil and ignition modules (all bought and fitted to cure a misfire around 2000rpm, which turned out to be harness related under the battery!) There's bound to be things I've forgotten so please feel free to ask questions to prompt my memory, I genuinely think she's a really very good example (if a little 'original' in the paint department). Sadly I just don't have the time or the space to enjoy and keep her. I'll give honest answers as that's how I'd like to be treated when buying a car, so ask away!
Still to do are the hard pipes on the inner wings for front strut returns need cleaning/replacing, NSF rack boot and the boot floor previously noted for some corrosion has been repaired. She did have welding work carried out in 2024 to the rear jacking points, inner sills and axle mounts, as well as some floor panels, so i believe her to be solid. (there is a receipt for this work too). Please contact us at KDS Automotive if this BX GTI 16v is of interest, it is available to view by appointment and is based in Hertfordshire.
About the Citroen Bx
The Citroen BX is a wonderfully distinctive and undeniably quirky family car that graced British roads from 1982 to 1994. Renowned for its signature hydropneumatic suspension, it delivers an incredibly comfortable, 'magic carpet' ride unlike almost anything else on the road. With its distinctive, angular styling penned by Marcello Gandini, the BX stands out from the crowd and appeals to classic car enthusiasts, those seeking a unique driving experience, and anyone who appreciates French automotive character.
Why Buy a Used Citroen BX?
- Unrivalled Comfort: The famous hydropneumatic suspension provides an exceptionally smooth and comfortable ride, soaking up bumps with ease.
- Distinctive Styling: Its angular, wedge-shaped design is unmistakably Citroen and turns heads, making it a unique classic car choice.
- Affordable Classic Ownership: Compared to many other classics, a BX can be a relatively accessible entry point into the world of classic car ownership, offering great value for money.
- Practicality: Despite its age, the BX offers a surprisingly spacious interior and a decent boot, especially in estate form, making it a usable classic.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- Pre-1987 (early models): £2,000 – £5,000 — These are typically earlier, often less powerful models, which may require some TLC to bring them up to scratch.
- 1988–1991 (mid-life models): £3,500 – £8,000 — A good price point for well-maintained, standard specification models that are ready to be driven and enjoyed.
- 1992–1994 (late models, GTi/TD): £6,000 – £12,000+ — Expect to find excellent condition, lower mileage, or desirable variants like the GTi or later TZS/TZI models at the higher end.
Common Issues to Check
- Hydropneumatic System: Look for leaks (LHM fluid), check suspension spheres for softness, and ensure the ride height adjusts correctly and quickly.
- Rust: Inspect sills, front wings, rear wheel arches, and suspension mounting points thoroughly, as rust can be a significant issue.
- Electrical Gremlins: Age-related wiring issues can lead to problems with the dashboard, lights, electric windows, and central locking.
- Brakes: Part of the LHM system, ensure the brakes feel firm and responsive, as issues with the main accumulator sphere or calipers can occur.
- Engine Bay Components: Check all rubber hoses, belts, and coolant pipes for deterioration, cracking, or leaks due to age.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: Expect 30–40 mpg for most petrol models, while diesel variants can achieve 40–55 mpg, depending on engine and driving style.
- Insurance Group: Typically falls into specialist classic car insurance categories, which can offer competitive rates for enthusiasts.
- Servicing: Requires a mechanic familiar with Citroen's hydropneumatic system; parts for standard mechanicals are generally available, but specific suspension components may need sourcing from specialists.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Citroen BX 1.4/1.6 (Petrol): Ideal for those seeking a straightforward, economical classic for local trips or as a charming daily driver.
- Citroen BX 1.9 D/TD (Diesel): A robust and highly economical choice, offering surprising torque and making it a good option for longer journeys or those after lower running costs.
- Citroen BX GTi / GTi 16v: For the enthusiast seeking performance, these rare models offer a more sporting drive while retaining the unique comfort.
- Citroen BX TZS/TZI: Later, well-equipped models that offer enhanced comfort and features, making them excellent long-distance cruisers.
- Citroen BX Estate: Offers exceptional practicality with a vast boot space, perfect for those needing a more versatile classic.
