About the Chevrolet Ssr

The Chevrolet SSR, or Super Sport Roadster, is a truly unique vehicle that blends the retro styling of 1940s American pickups with a modern V8 engine and an innovative retractable hardtop. Originally produced between 2003 and 2006, this distinctive convertible pickup was never officially sold in the UK, making it a rare and coveted grey import for enthusiasts seeking something genuinely different. It appeals to those who prioritise standout looks, a powerful American V8 rumble, and a fun, head-turning driving experience over conventional practicality or fuel efficiency. In the UK, its reputation is that of an exotic, collector's item, often admired at car shows and for weekend cruises.

Why Buy a Used Chevrolet SSR?

  • Unrivalled Styling: The SSR's unique retro-futuristic design is a guaranteed head-turner, standing out from almost anything else on UK roads.
  • American V8 Power: Enjoy the unmistakable sound and robust performance of a large-capacity American V8 engine, delivering a thrilling drive.
  • Convertible Fun: Experience open-air motoring with the convenience of a power-retractable hardtop, blending coupe security with convertible exhilaration.
  • Collector's Appeal: Due to its rarity as a grey import and limited production run, the SSR holds potential as a future classic and a valuable addition to a collection.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 2003–2004 (5.3L V8): £25,000 – £35,000 — These earlier models offer the distinctive SSR experience with the original V8 engine, often representing a slightly more accessible entry point.
  • 2005–2006 (6.0L LS2 V8 Auto): £30,000 – £40,000 — Later models with the more powerful LS2 engine and automatic transmission provide a significant boost in performance, perfect for cruising.

Common Issues to Check

  • Retractable Hardtop Mechanism: The complex roof system can develop issues with motors, sensors, or seals, leading to leaks or operational failures.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Like many American cars of its era, owners can report various electrical issues, from minor sensor faults to power window malfunctions.
  • Suspension Bushings and Shocks: Check for wear in suspension components, particularly bushings, which can lead to knocking noises or imprecise handling.
  • Rust (Underside/Chassis): As an imported vehicle, proper rust prevention is crucial, especially on the underside and chassis components, given the UK's climate.
  • Parts Availability & Servicing: Sourcing specific SSR parts can be challenging and costly in the UK, often requiring import from the US; ensure you have a specialist garage lined up.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 15 – 20 mpg
  • Insurance Group: 45 – 50
  • Servicing: Requires specialist attention, often involving importing parts from the US, making regular maintenance more costly than for mainstream UK vehicles.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • 2003-2004 (5.3L V8): Ideal for those who love the SSR's iconic styling and V8 rumble but might be on a slightly tighter budget, offering robust performance for cruising.
  • 2005-2006 (6.0L LS2 V8 Automatic): Best for buyers seeking enhanced performance and modern refinement, with the powerful LS2 engine and convenient automatic gearbox for effortless cruising.
  • 2005-2006 (6.0L LS2 V8 Manual): The ultimate choice for driving enthusiasts who crave maximum engagement and power, appreciating the rarity and hands-on experience of the six-speed manual paired with the potent LS2.
